A/Part of the crowd was named to reflect the simple fact that you can feel lonely, even when surrounded by people.
Loneliness is something many young adults go through, especially in times of change. We believe that talking about our loneliness helps create a sense of shared experience, understanding and belonging.
A-Part of the Crowd is an Australian research project that responds to the impact of loneliness during life changes on the mental health of people aged 18-25. We have gathered real stories of loneliness, change and everything in between. We’re currently creating support for young people navigating loneliness.

We have collected stories of loneliness, listening to what it means to young people through both individual submissions and co-design workshops.
In total, we gathered 130 stories from passionate young adults. They offered honest insights into how loneliness appears in early adulthood: in our relationships, at work, uni, when moving homes, and in the quiet moments in between.
To support this exploration, we hosted 13 workshops and created a crowdsourcing space where individuals could share their experiences independently if they preferred. We gathered stories across 11 different media forms, including poetry, prose, video, voice, and visual art.
We’re preparing to launch a new digital space that brings together the stories of loneliness shared by young adults across Australia. Soon, you’ll be able to explore these experiences in a beautiful, filterable collection, told through poetry, prose, video, voice, visual art, and more.
Alongside the website, we’re also releasing a companion book that gathers these stories in a tangible form. Both the site and the book are coming soon. We can’t wait to share them with you.

A/Part of the Crowd has been guided by a group of young people, with lived experience of, loneliness, life transitions and mental health challenges. The LEAG have provided ideas, guidance and feedback to co-create relatable, impactful solutions that reflect the needs of young Australians.
