Proper consideration of future mental health professionals
The Idea
It would be great to see a re-evaluation of university grades-based admission systems for courses like psychology, medicine and other professions where mental health help is sought. The current system fails to consider the diverse mental health challenges individuals may encounter while pursuing their degrees, which could hinder their academic performance. Anecdotally, many individuals who struggle academically due to lived experience of mental ill health may possess innate qualities crucial for succeeding in a “helping profession”.
Additionally, integrating a lived experience focus (beyond placements) into course content may better prepare future professionals to address diverse mental health needs effectively.
